The University of Exeter with 22000 students, is ranked amongst the The Times Higher Education World University Rankings top 1 per cent of universities in the world. In 2014 the UK Research Excellence Framework rated 98 per cent of research as of international quality. With more than 220 EU funded projects, the University has significant experience of participating in and managing European research and innovation. Camborne School of Mines (CSM) is a multidisciplinary department on the Penryn Campus in Cornwall with ca. 400 students and 27 academic staff. It brings together research expertise across the whole mining life cycle, including geology, mining and minerals engineering, environmental and social aspects. Links with Geography, Social Science, Business, History, the European Centre for Environment and Human Health and the Environment and Sustainability Institute in the university facilitate further indisciplinary work. CSM participates in nine current major European projects, has alumni worldwide and many industry partners. It is also well connected to local government and civic society in Cornwall and to a diverse network of local mining and mining-related businesses in the region (Cornwall Mining Alliance).
