While in remote regions of the world's mines frequently are operated as fly-in/fly-out undertakings, with little or no interactions with the surrounding areas, such modus operandi is neither desirable nor possible in most parts of Europe. MIREU’s aim is a sustained and sustainable long-term relationship between mining and metallurgical operations and their hosting regions.
Hence, the objectives of work package 3 are to:
• Determine the framework conditions that are either conducive or hampering mining and metallurgical development in the MIREU regions;
• Suggest improvements, if deemed necessary;
• Provide the MIREU regions with a tool to balance costs and benefits of developing mining and metallurgy.
