Luleå University of Technology (LTU) is a publicly funded technical university with a focus on sustainability. Our Social Sciences Division, which includes political science, economics, law, and history, possesses experience in research on socio-economic impacts of mining, public attitudes towards mining and social license to operate. This includes extensive work in mineral economics research, including issues related to policy, competitiveness and sustainable use of natural resources; natural resources law, including mineral law, land use assessment and licensing.  

Human Work Science is a research field that includes analysis, design and development of products, production systems and work organization based on people’s physiological, psychological, social and cultural conditions. Human Work Sciences at Luleå was founded in 1974 and has approximately 50 employees engaged in research and education in both technical and social science sector. The research is problem-oriented and conducted in close cooperation with stakeholders in the community.  

The team involved in this project are also part of Center of Advanced Mining and Metallurgy (CAMM) and has long experience of teaching and research in collaboration with the mining industry actors. CAMM is a centre of excellence in mining and metallurgy and will build world class teaching and research within the field. CAMM presently encompasses over 15 full professors, 60 senior staff and over 50 postgraduate students in 2009. Close to 500 peer-reviewed papers have been published the last five years. Research covers the whole chain from exploration for ores, mining, processing to the final product.
