Today the European Commission launched the European Raw Materials Alliance (ERMA). ERMA was announced as part of the Action Plan on Critical Raw Materials earlier in the month.
ERMA will contribute to ensuring reliable, secure and sustainable access to raw materials including metals, minerals and advanced materials across Europe. Its vision will be to secure access to critical and strategic raw materials and using know-how to develop EU Industrial Ecosystems. The alliance will involve relevant stakeholders from across the value chain.
ERMA was launched by vice-presidenet Maroš Šefčovič and Commissioner Thierry Breton. Mr Šefčovič spoke of Europe's ambition to be the first supplier of green energy and the need for critical raw materials to do so. Mr Breton meanwhile emphasised that Europe has no choice to succeed in this field, because the transition to a climate-neutral and digital society requires a change in approach to critical raw materials and related value-chains.
